Visnews filmed, May 13, as the last wisps of black smoke rose from the debris of Rolls Royce secret jet engine factory at Mountsorrel, near Leice, near Leicester, UK. Firemen searched among the burnt out workshops for dying flames.
Earlier, just after the fire started at 2 pm. 1,000 workers - men and women - marched quickly from the factory, leaving behind personal tools, handbags and coats. A blow-back in the furnace room is thought to be the fire cause.
Rapidly sheets of flame swept through the stores and engineering shops. "Faster than a man can run", said one employee. Within minutes what was once a top-secret jet-engine factory became a searing inferno. Fire brigades from all over the county, at least 20, raced along the main Loughborough-Leicester road, from which general traffic was diverted.
Damage is estimated at GBP1 million sterling. Production of Rolls Royce's reverse thrust engine, on order from the USA, will be transferred to other factories. Much of Mountsorrel's work comes under the Official Secrets Act.
