Background: TENSION HAS MOUNTED ON THE BORDER BETWEEN NORTH AND SOUTH KOREA, FOLLOWING ALLEGED RAIDS BY NORTH KOREANS ACROSS THE BORDER DRAWN UP BY THE UNITED NATIONS ARMISTICE COMMISSION.

THE UN COMMAND CLAIMS TO HAVE CAPTURED A QUANTITY OF ARMS FROM THREE NORTH KOREAN SOLDIERS KILLED ON THE SOUTH KOREAN BORDER ON THE NIGHT OF APRIL 12, WHEN A FORCE OF 90 NORTH KOREANS ARE SAID TO HAVE CROSSED THE ARMISTICE LINE.

WHEN THE ACCUSATIONS WERE PUT FORWARD AT A MEETING OF THE UN COMMAND AND NORTH KOREAN OFFICIALS AT PANMUNJOM JOINT SECURITY AREA ON FRIDAY THE NORTH KOREAN DELEGATION STORMED OUT OF THE MEETING.

THE UNITED NATIONS COMMAND CLAIMS THAT NORTH KOREANS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR A NUMBER OF BORDER CLASHES IN WHICH AT LEAST TEN NORTH KOREAN TROOPS HAVE BEEN KILLED.

THE SENIOR UN COMMAND DELEGATE AT THE PANMUNJOM MEETINGS, US MAJOR-GENERAL RICHARD G. CICCOLELLA, ALLEGED THAT THE NORTH KOREANS MADE A MAJOR ASSAULT ACROSS THE BORDER ON APRIL 12. THE UN EXHIBITED WEAPONS WHICH THEY SAID WERE CAPTURED DURING THE ATTACKS.

BUT NORTH KOREAN DELEGATES AT FRIDAY'S MEETING DENIED RESPONSIBILITY, MADE A NUMBER OF COUNTER-ACCUSATIONS, AND WALKED OUT OF THE MEETING, LED BY THEIR CHIEF DELEGATE, MAJOR-GENERAL PAK CHUNG KUK.

THE ARMISTICE LINE WAS DRAWN UP 14 YEARS AGO, AT THE END OF FIGHTING IN KOREA. SINCE THEN, 244 MEETINGS HAVE BEEN HELD BETWEEN UN OFFICIALS AND NORTH KOREANS TO TRY TO SETTLE A FINAL PEACE ALONG THE 155-MILE (250 KMS) FRONTIER.
