Background: Moves towards healing the rift between Syrian and the Palestinians -- the leader of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, Mr. Yasser Arafat, has been in Damascus for talks with Syrian leader, President Hafez al-Assad.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Arafat was in the Syrian capital on Wednesday (17 November) for talks with President Assad at the presidential palace. No official statements were released on the subject of the talks, but Mr. Arafat was widely reported to be trying to restore ruptured relations between the Syrians, Palestinians and the Lebanese left-wing led by Mr. Kamal Jumblatt.
As well as his talks with President Assad, Mr. Arafat also held discussions with Syrian Foreign Minister Abdul Halim Khaddam, and Air Force chief Naji Jamil. Topics discussed are believed to have included political reform in Lebanon, and the kind of political system which the Syrians favour for Lebanon. Recently, Syrian forces in Lebanon turned against their right-wing allies.
