    THE ITALIAN CITY OF TURIN RETURNED TO AN UNEASY CALM TODAY (FRIDAY) AFTER NINE HOURS OF VIOLENCE IN WHICH RIOT SQUADS CLASHED WITH ANGRY CROWDS IN THE CITY'S WORST STREET FIGHTING FOR YEARS. AT LEAST 65 PEOPLE WERE INJURED -- 50 OF THEM POLICEMEN.

    THE RIOTS FOLLOWED A STRIKE BY HALF A MILLION WORKERS PROTESTING AGAINST RISES IN RENT AND LACK OF HOUSING.

    THE WORST TROUBLE CAME AFTER YOUNG WORKERS WERE PREVENTED FROM HOLDING A MARCH.

    MORE THAN 1,000 POLICE, EQUIPPED WITH TEAR GAS, WERE CALLED IN TO RESTORE ORDER.

    AT LEAST 20 CARS AND THREE BUSES WERE BURNED BY DEMONSTRATORS AND LEFT ABANDONED IN THE STREETS. STONES, PIECES OF WOOD AND OTHER DEBRIS LITTERED THE ROADWAYS.

    AT SOME, PEOPLE HAD HURDLED FLOWER POTS AND FURNITURE FROM THEIR BALCONIES ONTO THE RIOTERS BELOW.

    POLICE DETAINED 167 DEMONSTRATORS.
