Background: The Australian government's decision to lift a 41-year-old ban on the export of merino rams has met with stiff opposition from the Australian trade union movement -- they think the lifting of the ban was unwise and should have been debated in Parliament. The union will not permit members to service an aircraft waiting to transport 150 rams to Europe.

The merino breed is the cornerstone of Australia's wool industry and unions claimed the export -- to Russia and East European buyers -- would damage the country's economic interests.
