  • Description

A SHIPLOAD OF STEEL PIPING WHICH ARRIVED AT DAR-ES-SALAAM, TANZANIA, YESTERDAY MEANS THAT A START WILL NOW BE MADE ON THE OIL PIPELINE WHICH WILL LINK DAR-ES-SALAAM WITH NDOLA, ZAMBIA AND PROVIDE ZAMBIA WITH AN ADEQUATE FUEL SUPPLY LINK.

THE NEW 1,000 MILE FUEL ARTERY WILL COST AN ESTIMATED GBP16,000,000 (STERLING) BUT ITS PLANNERS HOPE IT WILL END PETROL RATIONING IN ZAMBIA, WHICH HAS BEEN IN FORCE SINCE SUPPLIES FROM RHODESIA WAS CUT AT THE END OF 1965.

CONSTRUCTIONS WORK WILL START IMMEDIATELY AND THE CONTRACT - AWARDED TO AN ITALIAN COMPANY - CALLS FOR ITS COMPLETION BY SEPTEMBER, 1968.

SINCE 1935, MOST OF LANDLOCKED ZAMBIA'S PETROL HAS BEEN SHIPPED IN BY ROAD, OVER THE NOTORIOUS "HELL RUN" THE LARGELY UNTARRED GREAT NORTH ROAD LINKING DAR-ES-SALAAM WITH ZAMBIA. NOW, THE PIPELINE WILL FOLLOW THE ROUTE OF THE GREAT NORTH ROAD AND WILL CONSIST OF AN EIGHT-INCH PIPELINE SUNK INTO THE GROUND. SEVEN OR EIGHT PUMPING STATIONS WILL BE REQUIRED OVER THE LENGTH OF THE PIPELINE.

BUT ALREADY IN DAR-ES-SALAAM, PREPARATION WORK HAS BEEN DONE, AND THE ROUTE OF THE PIPELINE OUT OF THE TANZANIAN PORT HAS ALREADY BEEN CLEARED.
