The new look in air transportation fills the camp at Everett, Washington. Pan Am's 747?

  • Description

The new look in air transportation fills the camp at Everett, Washington. Pan Am's 747 fleet is in final stages of preparation before flying onto world air routes in 1970. The large capacity aircraft will accommodate expected increases in travel while proportionately decreasing air traffic.

Ground support equipment is rushed to completion by suppliers. At Miami, Florida, boarding steps are manufactured to conform to the specifications of the 747s. No present equipment can be utilized, as the new aircraft has larger doors permitting greater speed in loading operations.

Baggage container components are assembled at Goodyear Aerospace in Ohio for shipment to overseas stations. Each 747 will use 16 units capable of handling 700 pieces of luggage. The system is designed to allow delivery of all baggage within 15 minutes.

New powerful tow tractors are tested prior to start of service. The 747 will weigh 712,000 pounds at gross take-off weight. The unique system developed by Unit Rig and Equipment Company has the ability to crab laterally while in forward motion. Pan Am's outlay for aircraft and support equipment is more than a billion dollars as it develops the air transportation system of the next decade.
