  • Description

The Canadian organisers of the 1976 olympic Summer Games have convinced the International Olympic Committee that the Montreal site for the event will be complete on schedule.

Lord Killanin, President of the International Olympic Committee, made the announcement on Thursday (20 February) at the committee's headquarters near Lausanne in Switzerland after two days of meetings between the committee's Executive Board and representatives of the Montreal Games Organising Committee (COJO).

Because of construction delays caused mainly by a long iron workers' strike, and subsequent spiralling costs, there had been fears that the games might have to be shifted to another country, postponed or even cancelled. But Lord Killanin said on Thursday that the Executive Board now was convinced that, barring further unforeseen problems, the games would takes place in Montreal as scheduled, starting July 17, 1976.
