Background: Venezuelan President Rafael Caldera met President Nixon of the White House on Tuesday (2 June). According to Presidential spokesman Ronald Ziegler, the two heads of state met alone for an hour shortly after the Venezuelan leader's arrival in the United States.
According to Mr. Ziegler, the President discussed the U.S. oil import policy, bilateral trade and commercial relations, Venezuela's development plans and President Nixon's Latin American policy of "partnership."
The Venezuelan President and his wife met President Nixon, Secretary of State Rogers and other government officials in a brief ceremony on the White House lawn.
President Nixon welcomed the Venezuelan head of state and wished him a happy stay in America.
While the two Presidents met alone, senior officials of both governments met to discuss the oil import policy and its effects upon Venezuela.
