  • Description

Four armed Arab guerrillas took over the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, on Thursday (28 December) and demanded the release of 36 Arab commandos held in Israeli prisons in return for six Israeli diplomats being held hostage.

The guerrillas armed with sub machine guns, also demanded that the bodies of two commandos killed at Lydda Airport in Israel be returned to their families and they be given safe conduct once their demands were met.

More than 200 Thai Army troops and police armed with automatic weapons and tear gas, surrounded the two-storey building where the hostages were being held.

General Praphas Charusathien, the Deputy Thai Prime Minister, rushed to the scene and set up headquarters across the street from the Embassy. He was accompanied by Deputy Foreign Minister Major-General Chartchai Chunhawan and the Israeli Ambassador, Mr. Rahabam Amir, who had been attending the investiture of Thailand's new crown Prince when the guerrillas struck.

The attack on the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok came less than a month after the first major sign of Arab guerrilla activity in the Far-East -- a series of letter bombs bearing Malaysian stamps.
