Background: MORE THAN 8 DAYS AFTER ONE OF THE GREATEST FLOOD DISASTERS EVER, THE ITALIAN TOWN OF LONGARONE AT THE FOOT OF THE VAIONT DAM IS SLOWLY COMING BACK TO LIFE. EMPHASIS HAS BEEN PUT ON THE RE-BUILDING OF ROADS, SO THAT OUTSIDE HELP CAN BE EASILY BROUGHT IN TO HELP RESTORATION.

TEMPORARY BAILEY BRIDGES HAVE BEEN ERECTED OVER THE RIVER TO REPLACE THE SPANS OF THE FORMER BRIDGE DESTROYED WHEN THE WATERS SWEPT OVER THE DAM WALL JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT ON OCTOBER 9TH. BULLDOZERS ARE BEING USED TO CLEAR THICK MUD FROM THE STREETS. TELEPHONE LINES HAVE BEEN PATCHED UP, WHILE HERE AND THERE A SHOP HAS OPENED UP TO SELL WHATEVER GOODS HAVE BEEN SALVAGED. THE PRECISE LOCATIONS OF MANY BUILDING ARE NOT KNOWN. NUNS, SEARCHING FOR A KINDERGARTEN SCHOOL, TURNED OVER THE DEBRIS LOOKING FOR SCHOOL BOOKS. NEARBY, A PRIEST PRAYED ON WHAT REMAINED OF HIS CHURCH -- THREE ALTAR STEPS.

THE ENTIRE RESOURCES OF ITALY HAVE BEEN MOBILISED TO HELP THE SURVIVORS OF LONGARONE. RESCUE WORKERS, AIDED BY 2,500 TROOPS, HAVE SEARCHED FOR THE DEAD, AND HELPED IN CLEARING UP THE TOWN. FIREMEN AND SEVERAL VOLUNTEER ORGANISATIONS HAVE DONE STERLING WORK, WHILE THE BOY SCOUTS MOVEMENT HAS BEEN WIDELY PRAISED FOR ITS ASSISTANCE.
