Background: President Eisenhower welcomed Nigeria's Premier, Sir Abubaker Tafawa Balewa, Oct 8, to the White House, in Washington. The Nigerian Premier is leading his country's delegation to the United Nations. During the short discussion the two leaders are thought to have covered the Congo situation and the position of recently independent Nigeria.

Sir Abubaker addressed the General Assembly at the United Nations, Oct 7, when Nigeria became the 99th member state. He suggested that new elections should be held in the Congo Republic. He also stated the United Nations should send a fact-finding commission to the Congo, but the "big powers" should be barred from it.
