  • Description

ON MOUNT AKIBA, NEAR ODAWARA IN JAPAN, SHINTO PRIESTS AND BELIEVERS ON WEDNESDAY (6 DECEMBER) CELEBRATED THEIR ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF FIRE, WITH PRIESTS WALKING BAREFOOT THROUGH BURNING CINDERS. THE RITE HAS BEEN PRACTISED FOR THE PAST 350 YEARS.

SHINTOISM IS A DYING CULT -- EMBRACING NATURE AND ANCESTOR WORSHIP -- BUT THOSE PRIESTS STILL CALLED TO THE CULT UNDERGO TRAINING IN A REMOTE MOUNTAIN AREA. THE CULT, WHICH IS NOT A RELIGION IN THE STRICT SENSE, TEACHES THE INNATE GOODNESS OF THE HUMAN HEART.

THE UNDERLYING PRINCIPAL OF SHINTO RITES IS PURITY AND PURIFICATION, AND AT THE FIRE FESTIVAL THE PRIESTS WEAR SYMBOLIC WHITE ROBES AS THEY WORSHIP BEFORE THE AKIBA SHRINE.

DURING THE CEREMONY PEOPLE ARE GIVEN DRINKS OF WATER -- RECALLING THE TIMES WHEN PILGRIMS TO THE SHINTO SHRINES THROUGHOUT JAPAN RECEIVED FOOD AND DRINK FROM THE PRIESTS AS THEY MADE THEIR WAY AROUND THE COUNTRY.

ON THE NIGHT OF THE FESTIVAL, PRAYERS WERE REPEATED WHILE A FIRE OF WOOD WAS LIT. THE GREAT PRIESTS, FOLLOWED THEN BY THE OTHERS, THEN CROSSED THE FIRE BAREFOOT. THEY BELIEVE THAT THEIR TRUST IN THE SUN GODDESS WILL PROTECT THEM FROM HARM. AND DURING THE CEREMONY, NO-ONE WAS BURNED, DESPITE WALKING ACROSS GLOWING EMBERS.
