  • Description

EMPLOYEES OF THE SOUTHERN RHODESIAN DAIRY MARKETING BOARD - AMONG MANY THOUSANDS OF AFRICANS DISMISSED BY THEIR EMPLOYERS IN SALISBURY MAY 15 FOLLOWING THE PREVIOUS DAY'S 24-HOUR PROTEST STRIKE,-HEARD THE WORKS MANAGER SAY HE WOULD NOT TAKE THEM ON AGAIN AS THEIR STRIKE WAS UNOFFICIAL.

BUT ANGRY CROWDS STANDING OUTSIDE THE BOARD'S PREMISES REFUSED TO LEAVE. HELICOPTERS DIRECTED POLICE TO THE SCENE AND THE AFRICANS WERE EVENTUALLY PERSUADED TO DISPERSE QUIETLY. MANY MOVED ON TO THE CITY'S LABOUR EXCHANGE WHERE HUNDREDS WERE SEEKING NEW EMPLOYMENT.

DURING FRESH DISTURBANCES IN SALISBURY THAT DAY, TROOPS OF THE RHODESIAN LIGHT INFANTRY HAD ASSISTED POLICE TO CLEAR AFRICAN MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES OUT OF THE HOSTELS IN WHICH THEY LIVE. THEY WERE MOSTLY SINGLE MEN AND HAD IGNORED THE ORDER TO RETURN TO WORK.

AT UMTALI, POLICE WOUNDED FOUR AFRICANS WHEN THEY FIRED ON RIOTERS. THE RIOT WAS THE SEQUEL TO THE ARREST THE PREVIOUS DAY - MAY 14 - OF MR LEOPOLD TAKAWIRA, EXTERNAL RELATIONS OFFICER OF THE ZIMBABWE AFRICANS PEOPLES UNION, WHEN HE WAS ADDRESSING A POLITICAL RALLY AT UMTALI. RIOTERS AT UMTALI PUT UP ROAD BLOCKS, STONED POLICE, AND SET FIRE TO A MUNICIPAL TRACTOR. TROOPS WERE SENT FROM SALISBURY TO DEAL WITH THE SITUATION.
