  • Description

After eight days of bitter fighting in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, calm was restored on Wednesday (2 July) as some municipal workers returned to their jobs and traffic again jammed the streets.

But the signs of the fighting were everywhere, and bodies continued to be found in the rubble-strewn streets, bringing the number of known dead to 275.

Glass from explosions littered the streets, bombed out buildings smouldered and abandoned vehicles lined the roads.

Early estimates ??? damage to the city run as high as 190 million pounds sterling (437 million U.S. dollars).

The fighting broke out in a suburb of ??? days ago. it had been preceded by several other outbreaks beginning in April. Triggered by a relatively minor incident, it spread to all out factional war.

For years Lebanon has been a showcase in the Middle East of a successful balance between Christians and Muslims, but recently Muslims have demanded an increased voice in Lebanese affairs. This sparked opposition from the light-wing Falangist party, compose entirely of Christians, who want lebanon to remain independent of neighbouring Arab states.

During the fighting a new Government was formed in the hopes of healing some of the wounds and it is in the wake of this that fighting has slackened.

Even then, there was some sporadic shooting on Wednesday in the suburb of Furn al-Chubbak. and Ain al-Rummaneh, where the fighting started, is still officially declared to be dangerous.
