  • Description

The Dahomey President Hubert Maga recently visited the small community of Hinvi to lay the foundation stone of the Grand-Hinvi agricultural and industrial estate.

Ultimately the estate, to be built at a cost of 2 billion CFA frances, will co-ordinate the operation of 14 agricultural cooperatives, producing palm oil to be processed in a new refinery which will operate from March 1973. Thirty wells will be sunk to provide water for the community, and new roads will be built to improve communications and speed the transport of goods.

SYNOPSIS: The small Dahomey village of Hinvi had the most distinguished guest in its history recently when President Maga visited, with a large entourage, to lay the first stone at the Grand-Hinvi Agricultural and industrial Estate. The Government sets great store by the development achieved and foreseen at Hinvi, with Government and World Bank Financing. Eventually the produce of 14 jointly-run agricultural co-operatives will be efficiently distributed by modern transport on newly-constructed roads. A palm oil refinery will be operating from March 1973, and 30 wells will be sunk to provide water for 14 villages. The cost of the whole project will exceed 2 billion CFA francs.

President Maga emphasised in his speech the social importance of the project, which has developed out of agricultural experiments conducted with Government and international aid at Hinvi, beginning in 1955.

And later he laid the foundation stone of the project. The development spring from agricultural experiments begun at Hinvi in 1955, following a maize blight which ruined the Dahom??? harvest. The blight was ended by a Government and internationally finance programme of multiple sowing followed by intensive planning or palm trees to produce oil.
