  • Description

Prince Charles, 23-year-old heir to the British throne, received his "wings" as a fully-trained pilot in a ceremony at the Cranwell Royal Air Force College.

Prince Charles, who holds the rank of flight lieutenant, was parading at Cranwell for the last time. He completed his five-month training programme there three weeks ago, proving himself a pilot of "above average ability.".

The Prince's father, Prince Philip, who holds the rank of Marshal of the Royal Air Force, was there to share a unique occasion with his son. Prince Charles now leaves the Air Force and is due to join the Royal Navy in mid-September.

SYNOPSIS: Prince Charles, the 23-year-old heir to the British throne, qualified as a fully-trained air force pilot in a ceremony at Cranwell air force college. His father Prince Philip, himself a qualified pilot and Marshal of the Royal Air Force, was there to see the young Prince receive his "wings" from his commanding officer.

The ceremony was the climax of five months intensive training during which Prince Charles has lived the life of a rising young air Force officer and proved himself an above average pilot in a variety of jet aircraft. He has flown at more than the speed of sound, and his report says he would make an excellent fighter pilot.

It was a proud day too for one of the Prince's room-mates, Flight Lieutenant Mackay, who received the sword of honour as the most promising trainee officer of his year. The young officer from Glasgow is obviously set for a promising career in the Royal Air Force. But for Flight Lieutenant Prince Charles it is farewell to Cranwell's jet aircraft for the time being. Next month he's due to join the navy.
