  • Description

President Mohammed Daoud of Afghanistan held wide raging talks concerning regional issues, bilateral and international relations with the Shah of Iran in Teheran this week.

President Daoud who arrived on Saturday (26 April) spoke of his country's uneasy relations with Pakistan which is connected with Iran through the Central Treaty Organisation.

The Afghan leader said at a banquet in his honour that he wanted a peaceful and ;honourable settlement in a long-standing dispute between Pakistan and Afghanistan which nearly resulted in a war last year. The dispute is over Afghan support for the idea of autonomy for two tribes living on Pakistan's western borders.

President Daoud also discussed cooperation in agricultural development, trade and industry with his host.

Last year, Iran agreed to give Afghanistan between 10 and 20 million U.S. dollars to do research into rail and road systems and other industrial projects.

Afghan officials have since been quoted that they were confident that Iran would eventually give them between 1,000 and 2,000 million dollars in the next 10 years.
