SYNOPSIS: The Butterley Bricks event has grown in popularity with international sprint cyclists over recent years. This mont's race attracted 11 riders for the British Grand Prix series. John Nicholson -- seen here talking to Japan's Yoshikazu Cho -- was in top form for his passage to the final. But Morelon Shocked the crowd when he couldn't make the final three.

Match A in the final was between Nicholson -- in the white jersey and wearing number one -- and Kuricek.

There was some jockeying for position and then Nicholson went through on the inside. It was then up to the Australian to keep up the speed to the finish to be sure of beating Kuricek. But it was Kuricek. But it was Kuricek who came through on the final sprint with a burst of speed.

Match B saw Nicholson on the track again, but this time against Anton Tkac -- wearing number two. Nicholson wasn't keen for a repeat of his first round defeat and he took Tkac on the final sprint.

Everything rested with the third and final match. Nicholson's winning time had been slower than that of Kuricek. The two Czech riders met in match C. The reigning Olympic Champion, Tkac, had the power and speed. But on the final lap he slowed down and allowed his team mate to go through to win the match and the event. John Nicholson finished second overall and in third place was Anton Tkac.
