Background: River Jumna, one of the holy rivers of India on the banks of which lies Delhi, the capital of India, swells, crosses the danger mark and floods vast areas. Heavy rains in Delhi proper and in catchment area of the river were responsible for sudden rise of the level in the morning of 17th. Several villages were isolated by the flood waters and crops submerged under the flood waters being completely destroyed. Fast swirling waters breached the embankment at some points and quick steps were taken to fill the same with sand gunny bags. While cattle swam for safety to higher levels men and materials were rescued in boats.
