  • Description

The Australian aircraft carrier "Melbourne" arrived in Djakarta's Tanjong Priok harbour, 16th June on a Three-Day goodwill visit escorted into the Indonesian waters by Indonesian naval vessels. At the harbour, Col. (marine) Sudarso and members of an official welcome party boarded the "Melbourne" where they received by Australian officers. Later, Rear-Admiral Harrington motored to the naval headquarters where he was given a guard of honour by the Indonesian ratings.

At the headquarters he was received by Rear-Admiral Martadinata, Chief of Staff of the Indonesian navy. The Australian aircraft carrier is paying a courtesy visit to Australia's nearest neighbour at the invitation of the Indonesian Navy. Later this month ships of the Indian navy will also call at Djakarta and hold joint exercise with the Indonesian navy.

Although Indonesia had announced Melbourne's visit earlier this year its arrival in Djakarta aroused considerable speculation in the light of Dutch reinforcements in New Guinea and the despatch of the aircraft carrier "Karel Doorman" to Hollandia.

Rear-Admiral Harrington called on Indonesia's Defence Minister and Army Chief of Staff, Lt.-Gen.Abdul Harris Nasution. During his 48-hour stay in Indonesia, Rear-Admiral Harrington will call on President Sukarno and first Minister Dr. Djuanda.
