Baseball...and the American League team for the annual All-Stars contest against the rival National League has just ??? announced in the U.S.A.
This year's team--selected by the votes of millions of fans throughout the country--is dominated by players from the ??? A's and the New York Yankees.
The A's--three-times world champions and with a comfortable lead in the West Division so far this season--placed six players in the team for Tuesday's (15 July) 46th All-Stars game in Milwaukee.
The Oakland representatives include Gene Tenace at first base, Bert Campaneris at shortstop and Reggie Jackson and Joe Rudi in the outfield. All except Tenace have appeared in the American League All-Stars team before.
The Yankees have two brand-new All-Stars players among their four representatives. Third-baseman Graig Nettles and outfielder Bobby Bonds will line up alongside veteran All-Star and team??? catcher Thurman Munson and pitcher Jim (Catfish) Hunter for the game.
But the man who drew the biggest vote from the fans was Minnesota Quin's second-baseman Rod Carew, who topped the three million mark. Carew has won three consecutive American League batting titles and is well on the way to a fourth this season. His election means that he has been named as an All-Stars ??? in each of his major league season since 1967.
