Background: In a disappointing and bad-tempered soccer international at West Berlin's Olympic Stadium on Saturday (16 June), Brazil, the world champions, gained a 1-0 victory over West Germany.

What had been billed a s"the match of the century" between two of the most fancied teams for next year's World Cup, turned out to be a game where brawn took precedence over skill. Both teams have gained world renown for the fluency of their attacking football, but on Saturday it was little in evidence.

West Germany, missing their star mid-field player Gunther Netzer, struggled to find any real mid-field co-ordination and their usually devastating front three of Heynckes, Muller and Kremers were unable to make any impression on the sturdy Brazilian back four.

The only goal of the game came just 17 minutes from the end, when Dirceu, playing his first full international for Brazil, found himself unexpectedly clear just inside the penalty box and thundered a rising drive past the German goalkeeper Maier.

Three Brazilians -- Rivelino, Ze Maria and Luiz Pereia -- were booked by the Dutch referee, whose arbitrary decisions frequently angered the 75,000 crowd.

Speaking to newsmen after the match, West German team manager Helmut Schoen said, "I have seen many Brazilian teams but none like this in the way of violence. They did things that were beneath the dignity of Brazil. In Rome (where they lost to Italy 2-0) it was the other way round, so perhaps they have learned something from the italians."
This was Brazil's first win during their current European tour, which they are using as preparation for the World Cup Finals to be held in West Germany next year.
