Background: INTRODUCTION Two AWACS aeroplanes were sent to Egypt from the United States as part of a package of extra military aid.The package was said to be a gesture of support following the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat.Egyptian and US officials have said that the aircraft would be patrolling Egypt's tense western border with Libya.

SYNOPSIS: The US AWACS radar planes were shown to western newsmen, who were also allowed to interview crew members. The aircraft are being used to familiarise Egyptian radar controllers, who normally work in radar sites on the ground. They are also intended to watch for possible Libyan attacks on the Sudan. The US have stated that the planes were sent to show confidence in the country's new President Hosni Mubarak, and as support for Egypt's defence.Sudan has a defence pact with Egypt, signed in 1976.The AWACS can detect air traffic as far south as Sudan's border with Chad.

The aircraft will patrol the Egyptian border with Libya. They will be operating from airbases west of Cairo and near Aswan in southern Egypt. The Sudanese claim the Libyans have infiltrated murderers, terrorist and saboteurs into Khartoum.Egypt has already sent anti-aircraft batteries to reinforce Sudanese units.

The AWACS aircraft are similar to those the Reagan administration wants to sell to Saudi Arabia. In November, the US, Egypt and Sudan will hold joint military exercises in Egypt as a show of strength in the face of what they allege is Soviet-inspired Libyan adventurism.Libya has called on the US to cancel the manoeuvres and withdraw the two surveillance aircraft.
