Background: Delegations from eighteen Arab countries attended the opening of a Scout jamboree at Batroun, 15 miles (24 Kilometers) north of the Capital, Beirut, on Saturday (August 24). After the official opening by Lebanese President Sleiman Franjieh, the jamboree began with a large parade and helicopter fly-past.
More than 2,500 boy and girl scouts are taking part in the jamboree - they come from Kuwait, Algeria, Qatar, Sudan, Syria, Iraq, Tunisia, Libya, Jordan, Bahrain, Egypt, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the Yemen Arab Republic, the Sultanate of Oman, Lebanon. The Palestinian movement is also represented.
Learning to "be prepared" was not the only theme of the gathering - lectures are being given by various members on training in the different areas, on Arab solidarity, the essentials of good citizenship and community service.
