  • Description

A joint statement by political leaders in Greece and Cyprus on Friday (17 June) says the two Governments are in complete agreement on the further handling of the Cyprus issue. President Makarios and the Greek Premier, Constantine Karamanlis, say they now hope for understanding by the new Turkish government that will provide a just solution.

SYNOPSIS: President makarios met Mr. Karamanlis after returning from the British Commonwealth conference in London. The main topic in President makarios' two days of talks with cabinet and opposition members was the future handling of the Cyprus issue in the light of recent Turkish elections.

During his visit to Athens President Makarios said Greek Cypriots had made many concessions to reach agreement but the Turkish side had still not shown even elementary indications of goodwill. Cyprus has been divided since a Turkish invasion nearly three years ago.

President Makarios has stressed that he is not prepared to make concessions for a settlement under blackmail or under any threat whatsoever. He believes Greek Cypriots are undergoing the most crucial stage of their long history, facing the danger of physical and national extermination.
