  • Description

The middleweight boxer, Shako Mamba of Zaire, won the newly created African Middleweight Championship title in Lome, Togo, when he beat Ghana's Joe Oke, the Ghanaian and West African title-holder. The fifteen round contest only reached the ninth round, when Mamba -- known by his own countrymen as the "Jungle Fighter" -- laid Oke on the canvas to be counted out.

Some observers believe that Mamba's win now puts him among the best ten boxers of his weight in the World. Mamba has one of the heaviest punches in Africa, and he was proved not only an intelligent fighter, but also one who can surprise his opponent with his varied technique.

Moreover, Oke found that the Zairian rarely dropped his guard, and was consistently faster than he in attack. Oke, on the other hand, did let his gloves fall lower than his chin on many occasions, and Mamba made use of every opportunity to administer blows to the body and head. Oke certainly proved that he could take punishment.

But eventually the weak guard of the Ghanaian proved fatal. The "Jungle Fighter" trapped Oke against the ropes mid-way in the ninth round, and delivered, first a left and then a right hook to the head. Oke slumped to the canvas and the referee began to count him out. Despite his seconds interrupting the count when they tried to give him a hand up, the fight was over. It was Oke's first defeat in his professional career.
