  • Description

The Foreign Ministers of Algeria, Mauritania and Morocco have begun talks in Algiers on the development of political and economic cooperation between the North African Maghreb Arab countries.

The three Ministers -- Hamdi Ould Mouknass of Mauritania, Abdelaziz Bouteflika of Algeria and Abdellatif Filali of Morocco -- are also expected to discuss the position of the Spanish Sahara. At a summit meeting in Mauritania in September 1970, Presidents Boumedienne and Ould Daddah, together with King Hassan of Morocco, agreed to increase joint efforts towards decolonisation of the Spanish-held territory.

On Tuesday (4 January), Mr Ould Mouknass and Mr Bouteflika went to Algiers airport to welcome Mr Filali shortly before the first session of talks was scheduled to begin.
