BRITAIN LEAD BELGIUM 2-0 AFTER THE FIRST DAY OF THEIR DAVIS CUP, EUROPEAN ZONE, SECOND ROUND MATCH. BILLY KNIGHT (BRITAIN) BEAT JACKIE BRICHANT; AND MIKE SANGSTER (BRITAIN) BEAT EMIL DROSSART.

THE TEMPERATURE ON THE ROYAL LEOPOLD CLUB COURTS WAS ABNORMALLY HIGH WHEN BILLY KNIGHT AND JACKIE BRICHANT, THE BELGIAN CHAMPION, CAME ONTO THE COURT TODAY (FRIDAY) FOR THE FIRST MATCH. KNIGHT WON THE FIRST TWO SETS 6-3 AND 6-2. HE SEEMED READY TO WIN THE THIRD SET WHEN THE SCORE STOOD AT 6-5 AND HE WAS SERVING. HOWEVER BRICHANT CAME BACK WITH TWO BRILLIANT VOLLEYS TO LEVEL 6-6. NOW THE ATMOSPHERE TENSED AND THE CROWD STIRRED TO CHANT "ALLEZ JACKIE" FOR THE BELGIAN, PLAYING IN HIS 116TH DAVIS CUP TIE FOR HIS COUNTRY. BRICHANT WENT ON TO WIN THE THIRD SET 8-6. AFTER THE INTERVAL KNIGHT WAS ABLE TO HOLD HIS ADVANTAGE AND TOOK THE SET 6-2.

SANGSTER AND DROSSART CAME ONTO COURT IN THE COMPARATIVE COOL OF THE EVENING. DROSSART, 21 YEARS OLD, STARTED WELL. HE LED THE FIRST SET 6-5 AND 40-15 ON SANGSTER'S SERVICE - TWO SET POINTS. BUT THEN THE BELGIAN PUT A RETURN INTO THE NET AND SANGSTER'S STRONG SERVICE ENABLED HIM TO WIN THE SET. DROSSART WAS NOT BEATEN EASILY. HE FOUGHT HARD IN THE FOLLOWING TWO SETS TO GO DOWN 7-5, 6-4.

BRITAIN NOW NEED TO WIN ONLY ONE OF THE THREE REMAINING MATCHES TO ENTER THE THIRD ROUND OF THE CUP, TO BE PLAYED AT EASTBOURNE, ENGLAND, NEXT MONTH, AGAINST RUSSIA OR CHILE.

(IN STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN LEAD RHODESIA-NYASALAND 3-1 ALSO IN THE DAVIS CUP TOURNAMENT.)
