  • Description

The Britannia aircraft carrying Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh to India, made of brief stop January 20 at the Royal Air Force nuclear base at Akrotiri, Cyprus.

After a warm welcome from hundreds of British servicemen and their wives, the Queen drove to the officers' mass for an informal first meeting with Archbishop Makarios.

British representative in Akrotiri, Mr W. Clark, said that from the visit "it is evident that the past is behind us - the final seal of friendship with Cyprus is restored". The last royal visit to Cyprus was in 1191.by Richard Coeur de Lion.

The refuelling of the Britannia only allowed for a 45-minute meeting with the Archbishop. Then the Queen and the Duke were away again on the second stage of their flight to New Delhi.

On arrival in New Delhi Jan 21, the Queen and the Duke were given a moving welcome by a vast gathering of over 2 million people. It was the first visit by a British reigning monarch in 50 years and marked the tenth anniversary of India becoming a Republic.
