Background: GHANA'S FORMER FINANCE MINISTER, MR. K.A. GBEDEMAH, DENIED AT THE MANYO-PLANGE ASSETS COMMISSION IN ACCRA ON THURSDAY (JUNE 5), THAT A THREE-MAN PRESIDENTIAL COMMISSION OF WHICH HE WAS A MEMBER IN 1961 APPROVED THE PURCHASE OF A NEW CHANCELLERY BUILDING IN WASHINGTON. HE DENIED THAT THE PRESIDENTIAL COMMISSION HAD AUTHORISED THE THEN FOREIGN MINISTER, MR. AKO - ADJEI, TO PROCEED WITH NEGOTIATIONS ON THE SALE.

MR. GBEDEMAH WAS REPLYING TO MR. AKO-ADJEI'S ALLEGATIONS TO THE COMMISSION THAT HE DREW THE PRESIDENTIAL COMMISSION'S ATTENTION TO ADVERSE REPORTS ON THE WASHINGTON BUILDING. MR. AKO-ADJEI HAD ALLEGED THE PRESIDENTIAL COMMISSION IGNORED THESE REPORTS AND APPROVED THE BUILDING'S PURCHASE.

AFTER MR. GBEDEMAH'S EVIDENCE, THE COMMISSION'S CHAIRMAN, MR. MANYO - PLANGE ORDERED THAT THE PRINCIPAL SECRETARY OF THE EXTERNAL AFFAIRS MINISTRY BE SUBPOENED TO PRODUCE THE FILE ON THE PURCHASE OF THE CHANCELLERY BUILDING.

HE THEN WARNED MR. AKO-ADJEI THAT THE COMMISSION WAS TRYING TO GET COPIES OF HIS MEMORANDUM, AND IF NO ADVERSE REPORT ON THE BUILDING WAS FOUND HE WOULD HAVE COMMITTED A SERIOUS WILFUL PERJURY.

MR. AKO-ADJEI THEN ENTERED THE WITNESS BOX AND SAID HE WAS CORRECTING HIS EVIDENCE ABOUT THE MEMORANDUM. THE COMMISSION ADJOURNED UNTIL MONDAY (JUNE 9).
