Francois-Xavier Ortoli of France on Saturday (6 Jan) took over as President of the enlarged Executive Commission of the E.E.C. Dr. Sicco Mansholt of Holland handed over to him at a brief ceremony in Brussels.
The new President was introduced to the top officials with whom he'll be working
The two men then spoke briefly to journalists.
M. Ortoli, in his first public statement, declared that the 13 man commission - which initiates and administers E.E.C. policy - was facing an exceptional responsibility an opportunity. He was referring to the fact that over its four year term of office, the commission will have to steer through a far-reaching programme sketched out by Common Market leaders at their summit in Paris last October.
Later, M. Ortoli presided over the first meeting of the enlarged Commission.

Later, M. Ortoli presided over the first meeting of the new enlarged Executive.
He told his Commissioners they must ensure that the European Community develops inte??? This was essential for its working, for it people, their well being and for the quali??? of their lives.
M. Ortoli also said they must ensure that the community plays a full part in a number of international negotiations.
