  • Description

AMERICAN ART COLLECTOR NORTON SIMON LAST NIGHT (WEDNESDAY) PAID 1,550,000 DOLLARS (645,833 STERLING) FOR A RENOIR PAINTING AT AN AUCTION IN NEW YORK. IT WAS THE HIGHEST PRICE EVER PAID FOR AN IMPRESSIONIST PAINTING.

MR. SIMON, A PUBLISHER AND FOOD MANUFACTURER, PAID THE RECORD PRICE FOR RENOIR'S "LE FONT DES ARTS, PARIS, 1868", ECLIPSING THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 1,411,000 DOLLARS PAID AT CHRISTIE'S AUCTION ROOMS IN LONDON IN 1967 FOR CLAUDE MONET'S "LA TERASSE A ST. ADDRESSE".

A TOTAL OF 10 PAINTINGS WERE SOLD IN LAST NIGHT'S SALE, AT THE PARK-BERNET GALLERIES OF NEW YORK. THE TOTAL PRICE BROUGHT FROM THE SALE WAS 3,745,000 DOLLARS (1,558,333 STERLING).

BIDDING WAS BRISK FOR THE RENOIR PAINTING. IN LITTLE MORE THAN FIVE MINUTES OWNERSHIP HAD TRANSFERRED TO MR. SIMON FROM FORMER OWNERS MR. AND MRS. CLIFFORD KLENK OF WAINSCOTT, NEW YORK.

IN 1875, AFTER AN UNSUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION IN PARIS, THE PAINTING WAS SOLD FOR ONLY 200 FRANCS.
