  • Description

In Brussels Yugoslav and European Economic Community delegates have resumed talks on drawing up a new five-year agreement on trade and economic co-operation.

SYNOPSIS: The talks are being held at the EEC Commission's headquarters. The new agreement, which would be the third between the two parties, is aimed at replacing the five-year pact that expires in September this year.

Yugoslavia suffers a large deficit with the Community, which is its largest trading partner. So the Yugoslavs want the new agreement to be broader -- covering trade, industrial, technical and financial co-operation, and migrant workers.

Monsieur Pierre Duchateau is leading the Community's team. He is the director of the EEC Commission's General Directorate for External Relations. Yugoslavia aims at bringing her overall relationships with the Community much closer to a state of balance.

Though an independent Communist country, Yugoslavia wants the EEC to treat her as European, Mediterranean, a developing country and a non-aligned state. Considering herself as Mediterranean, Yugoslavia believes her status with the Community will be changed if Greece was to become a Common Market members. In addition, Yugoslavia feels that her status as a non-aligned nation entitles a unique relationship in diplomatic areas.
