  • Description

SOME 300 MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE FOR A SANE NUCLEAR POLICY - MOSTLY YOUNG PEOPLE, MANY OF THEM NEGROES - CARRIED PLACARDS CONDEMNING RUSSIAN NUCLEAR TESTS AND APPEALING FOR PEACE IN A MARCH TO THE SOVIET CONSULATE IN NEW YORK, OCT 28.

PAUL GREENBERG, SECRETARY OF THE COMMITTEE, TOOK A PROTEST NOTE SIGNED BY ALL DEMONSTRATORS INTO THE CONSULATE, WHERE HE REMAINED FOR ABOUT HALF AN HOUR. POLICE, WHO WERE WATCHING AND DIRECTING THE MARCHERS, THEN MOVED THEM ON.

AS THE MARCHERS PROCEEDED INTO THE AREA OF THE UNITED NATIONS BUILDING, THE POLICE BROKE THE CROWD UP INTO TWO SECTIONS. ONE SECTION STARTED A SIT-DOWN STRIKE ON THE PAVEMENT UNTIL THE POLICE RELENTED AND ALLOWED THE WHOLE GROUP TO REUNITE. THE DEMONSTRATORS SOON DISPERSED QUIETLY.
