  • Description

Muhammad Ali, the former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, despatched another opponent by stopping Al "Blue" Lewis of Detroit in the eleventh round of their scheduled twelve-round bout at Croke Park in Dublin on Wednesday night (19 July).

Lewis, 29, was the seventh man to lose to Ali since the former champion failed to win back the title from Joe Frazier last year. Wednesday's fight was little more than a workout for the expected re-match with Frazier.

When the referee stopped the bout at one-minute and 15 seconds of the eleventh round, Lewis' face was badly bruised and he peered around the ring through horribly swollen eyes. Ali had jabbed, hooked, used the uppercut and put together fast combinations, one of which sent Lewis to the canvas in the fifth round. Controversy erupted when the bell saved Lewis from a knockout, and Ali's manager said the count was too slow. But the fight continued until the eleventh round.

Timekeeping errors--some rounds obviously strayed past the three-minute limit--were explained later when it was revealed that two of the timekeeper's watches had stopped during the first round, and he had to borrow a watch from a ringside spectator.

Earlier, at the weigh-in, Ali was quieter than usual. He had been suffering from a cold for six-days before the fight. The former champion weighed in at 217 1/2 pounds (98.6 kilograms), six pounds (2.7 kilograms) lighter than his opponent.
