Background: As Bolivia's new rulers struggle for international recognition and face further resistance from the country's miners, the fate of the former president, lidia Gueiler, remains uncertain.

SYNOPSIS: The swiftness of the military uprising on the 17th of July took Bolivian democratic forces by surprise. The death or arrest of many of their leaders left them in disarray. Hundreds are said to have been arrested, including priests, journalists, politicians and trade unionists. Thousands more have gone into hiding or asked for asylum in foreign embassies.

President Gueiler, arrested with all her cabinet and forced to resign, is now in the Vatican Embassy, awaiting a safe conduct into exile.

Even the Roman Catholic Church has come under attack. Its radio station in La Paz, Fides, was destroyed and the Jesuit priest who ran it was arrested. As well, the Catholic newspaper Presencia was invaded by para-military forces and three of its editors were detained. The paper has now been handed back to its owner.
