Background: The Australian Mountain Grand Prix car race held near Salzburg August 16, was won by Austrian champion Ernst Vogel.

This is the fifth of six races for the International Mountain Championship. The first four were held in France, the USA, Italy and Germany; the last will take place in Switzerland.

Race No.5 was by far the most strenuous for drivers and vehicles alike. Driving rain and dense fog in the flood-drenched Salzburg area made tackling the Gaisberg mountain road, with its narrow bends and sheer drops, a neck-breaking task. Ghost-like the cars emerged from sheets of rain to vanish only seconds later in the almost impenetrable veil cast over the Gaisberg.

Despite this enormous handicap. Austrian Ernst Vogel - known for his driving skill on rain-swept roads - carried the day. Heinrich Walter of Switzerland was second and von Trips of Germany third. All three were driving 1,498cc Porsche RSK models.
