  • Description

Heaviest snowfall in 50 years, thawed by the recent spring rains, has spilled millions of a gallons of water into the Mississippi River, throughout the Mid-West area of the United States. River banks unable to contain the swollen river have burst, with the result that over 30,000 acres of rich farmland are flooded.

Through Illinois and Missouri to Iowa and southwards to Louisiana, the great Mississippi has spread disaster for the people who live along its banks. Over 2,000 people are homeless due to rushing water that crashes through anything in its path. National Guardsmen have moved into the flood-stricken areas to strengthen river defence and help flood victims.

In the midst of the fight against the elements, census-takers have found rowing boats more useful than motor cars. The US census is the first to be carried out since 1950. Teams working through cities, towns and villages are having a hard struggle under the present weather conditions.

Total population in the United States in 1950, was given as 151,133,000. More recent estimates put the present figure at about 171,790,000.
