ROLLS-ROYCE has now built its 5,000th Dart turbo-prop engine.

Of this total, more than 70 per cent valued at GBP71.2m. have been exported, and together with the export of parts for the engine, worth GBP46.3m., the total export earnings of the Dart at the end of 1996 amounted to GBP117.5m.

Announcing this yesterday, Rolls-Royce said that a total of over 1,300 Dart powered civil aircraft are in service with, or on order for, 115 airlines, and more than 190 other operators in 57 countries. To date, Darts have logged over 38m. hours of operation.

The Darts covered by the sums mentioned are either engines that have gone directly overseas for installation in foreign-built airframes or into U.K. produced aircraft sold abroad.

A high proportion of the engines have gone to North America, and the dollar content of the total engine and spares export figure is GBP44.3m.

The Dart, the first turbo-prop engine in commercial operation powers 13 types of civil and military aircraft. Roll-Royce expects further substantial business with the engine in the period ahead.
