President Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya was guest of honour at the May Day celebrations held in Nairobi yesterday (Friday). Several thousand people packed Uhuru Park in the capital to witness the march past led by the President and his Government ministers.
It was one of the most colourful and exciting displays held in Nairobi's history. More than three hundred people took part in the grand procession through the park to the applause of the large crowd. Trick cyclists and traditional dancers added to the spectacle.
President Kenyatta's motorcade entered the the park to start the celebrations. After the march past the President headed the long procession as it made its way into the centre of Nairobi.
Later the President addressed a large gathering of workers. He thanked them for the support they had given over the last year and urged them to work even harder in the coming months to continue the rapid progress the country has made.
