  • Description

Eighty-five thousand tons of surplus grain has been shipped to the coastal marshes of North Carolina where forty thousand rare Snow geese have been obliged to extend their winter stay. Prolonged and unseasonably cold weather has prevented these migrants from returning to their abode
By staying longer the geese would deplete the normal supply of foods, so the North Carolina wildlife Resources Commission has undertaken to distribute the grain. This should alleviate the birds' hunger and stop them flying inland to plunder the farm crops.

A secondary feature of 'Operation Birdfood' has the capture and ringing of samples from the flocks for observation purposes.
