    Nigerian leaders, including Head of State Yakubu Gowon, have been paying tribute to the country's influential chairman of the Bank of the North, Alhaji Ali Akilu, who was fatally injured in a car crash last week. Government representatives were present at his funeral in Kaduna on Thursday (January 21).

    After an early career as a civil servant and a period studying at university in Britain, Alhaji Akilu rose rapidly in the Federal administration.

    In 1961, he became permanent secretary to the Ministry of Economic Planning and two years later was promoted to Head of the Civil Service in Northern Nigeria -- a post he held until 1968.

    Besides his position as bank chairman, he served on the boards of several important industrial and social concerns General Gowon declared that the death of one of the country's most outstanding administrators was a "terrible blow" to the Nigerian people.
