At the Hilton Hotel in Nairobi, a fashion show in benefit of the Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organisation, was attended yesterday (Friday) by Her Excellency Mama Ngina - wife of Kenya's President. After a display of Kenyan tribal outfits, designs by British, french, Swiss and Austrian countries were shown.
The occasion was staged to raise funds for the building of a new headquarters building for the Maendeleo organisation which is dedicated to the "betterment and the well-being of women in their homes and their work."
The Organisation was founded 19 years ago and has 100,000 members throughout Kenya.
Among the first outfits shown was a French Apricot tunic with black trousers in wool jersey by Moira. This was followed by another trouser suit in Trevira from Belle for Switzerland. A yellow dress described as "baby chick" was presented by Vicky for Paris.
Lynnette, for the Paris collection, presented nine outfits in all, made a hit with a white wool cape with gold buttons. A white dress in linen and cotton lace was shown by Moira for Austria.
A cool-looking hand-made cotton lace dress with muslim trim by Belle was yet another French presentation - 29th outfit out of a 59-piece display laid on by "Modes Limited" for the Kenyan woman's Maendeleo Ya Wanawake organisation, who so successfully launched their fund-raising appeal on this occasion.
