  • Description

President de Gaulle received an enthusiastic welcome when he visited Tamatave, Madagascar, July 5. Some ten thousand people flooded the streets of this coastal town to greet him, and add to the welcome given him the day before on his arrival in Madagascar.

After speeches from President Tsiranana and the Mayor of Tamatave, the President addressed the crowds, reminding them of the aims of the French Community. As the speeches were made, Madame de Gaulle sat beside President Tsiranana's wife in an official stand.

President do Gaulle then mingled with the crowd - now a firmly established tradition of his on occasions like this - and spoke to a group of bemedalled war-veterans. On leaving Tamatave, he visited Diego Suarez, in the north of the island, where again he was warmly acclaimed.

President de Gaulle arrived in Madagascar from Djibouti on his tour of the French Community in Africa and the Indian Ocean, and on July 7 and 8 the first meeting of the French Community's Executive Council to be held outside Paris took place in Tananarive, Madagascar's capital. It was the Council's 4th meeting.
