The 180,000 capacity crowd at the giant Maracan Stadium exploded into wild cheering and drum-beating to greet the victory of the former colony over its colonial rulers.
Earlier, in a match to decide third and fourth places between Argentina and Yugoslavia, a scrappy display culminated in a wild ten-minute brawl in the second half. Yugoslavia won the match 4-2.

The month-long international tournament was staged to commemorate one-hundred and fifty years of Brazilian independence from Portugal. The Portuguese team showed that it was equal to the Brazilians in many respects.
But Brazil kept steady pressure on the Portuguese goal keeper. The teams were equally matched throughout the first half, but neither managed a score. There was some hard tackling, but nothing to match that of the Argentina-Yugoslavia match, where a ten-minute brawl erupted in the second half.
Brazil kicked off the begin the second half and quickly moved toward the Portuguese goal.
