  • Description

The oil well which has been burning out of control, in the Gulf of Mexico, since it caught fire on Tuesday (December 1), may be allowed to continue burning for several weeks. The oil company is considering this in an effort to minimise pollution.

Two men died when there was an explosion on the rig, causing the blaze. At the time of the explosion 60 men were working on the platform, ten miles off the Louisiana coast in Bay Marchand. All 58 survivors were injured, three of them critically.

Paul (Red) Adair, a well-known oil-well fire-fighter, flew to the area and is in control of fire-fighting operations.
