  • Description

Four Arab leaders met at a summit conference in Algiers on Wednesday (13 February) to discuss Arab strategy in the negotiations with Israel for a permanent Middle East peace.

Egypt's President Anwar Sadat, King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, Syria's President Hafez al Assad and Algeria's President Houari Boumedienne met behind closed doors at the People's Palace in Algiers.

The leaders were reported to be split at the start of the conference on the question of whether to ease the Arab oil embargo against the United States.

Algeria and Syria were reported to be against easing the restrictions, because they feared this would reduce the chances of the United States exerting pressure in Israel to make concessions.

But Egypt and Saudi Arabia were reported to be ready to ease the oil embargo following the Israeli-Egyptian military disengagement.

The two-day summit ended in secrecy on Thursday (14 February) without any official statement on the discussions.
