FRANCE'S BIGGEST FOOD MARKET, LES HALLES IN PARIS, HAS FOUND A NEW HOME. AN ARMY?

  • Description

FRANCE'S BIGGEST FOOD MARKET, LES HALLES IN PARIS, HAS FOUND A NEW HOME. AN ARMY OF WORKERS, DESCENDED ON THE HUGE PAVILIONS WHICH HOUSED THE 800-YEAR-OLD MARKET, ON FRIDAY, AND BY YESTERDAY (SATURDAY), HAD TRANSFERRED ALL EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES TO THE NEW SITE AT RUNGIS, EIGHT MILES SOUTH OF PARIS.

LES HALLES, COLOURFULLY NICKNAMED BY EMILE ZOLA THE "BELLY OF PARIS", OCCUPIED ONE OF THE OLDEST, SEEDIEST, AND MOST COLOURFUL DISTRICTS OF FRANCE. WITH ITS ROWS AND ROWS OF RAW MEAT CARCASES, HEAPED CRATES OF VEGETABLES AND CLOGGED STREETS, IT WELL EARNED IT'S NICKNAME.

BUT ITS SITE, COVERING 80 ACRES (32 HECTARES), IS TO BE RE-DEVELOPED. AS WORKERS CLEARED THE 35 PAVILIONS WHICH OCCUPY ITS SITE, A TEAM OF CITY EMPLOYEES MOVED IN TO POISON THE ESTIMATED 300,000 RATS THAT HAD MADE THE MARKET THEIR HOME.

THE NEW MARKET SITE, WHICH COVERS AN AREA OF NEARLY 1,500 ACRES (600 HECTARES), HAS BEEN DESIGNED SO THAT THE MARKET CAN BE RUN ON A PROFESSIONAL BASIS.

IT IS CLOSE TO RAILWAY FACILITIES AND A SPECIALLY PREPARED ROAD NETWORK WILL PROVIDE IMPROVED TRANSPORT OF VEGETABLES, FRUIT, FLOWERS AND REFRIGERATED FOODSTUFFS.

FOODSTUFFS CAN BE DELIVERED TO THE MARKET WITHOUT THE NECESSITY OF TRAVELLING THROUGH THE CENTRE OF PARIS -- A PROBLEM WHICH HAS GROWN CONSIDERABLY IN RECENT YEARS AS THE NARROW STREETS BECAME INCREASINGLY CLOGGED WITH TRAFFIC.
