  • Description

Two passengers were killed and 30 injured when a small "skiers train" was de-railed 4 miles outside the popular winter-sports centre of Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, Mar 12. The passenger-car was thrown on its side and rescuers worked to free the train-load of 80 people - hurled suddenly on top of each other.

The train left Cortina on its 20 mile journey to Calalzo in the Dolomites after heavy snow had fallen for 24 hours. The baggage car suddenly de-railed and turned cross-wise on the track.

Built in 1916 for military purposes, the railway had not had any serious accidents in 44 years. Latterly the train service has been mainly used for skiers.
